Fruited Plains Agricultural Training Centre’s Fist Graduating Class

On July 26th, 2014 the Fruited Plains Agricultural Training Centre celebrated its 1st graduating class. The struggling farmers of Mt. Elgon gained knowledge on how to farm year round in order to provide food and income for their families. In addition to gaining knowledge in bio-intensive agricultural practices, they learned how to run their farms like a business and were introduced to 13 new crops that will provide additional nutrients to their families. As part of our celebration we had a “Taste of Mt. Elgon” so the farmers and their wives could learn how to prepare some of the new crops that were introduced in class. Printed recipes with nutritional information was provided for all the new meals they tried. The 23 graduating students were also given some starter seeds to plant on their farms. Each graduate will train 20 additional farmers in their local communities. That means 483 farmers will benefit from the training in 2014!

The Training Centre was a success! Rather than take our word for it, we thought it would be best if your heard directly from the students. Here is what a few of the students had to say. These 3 testimonies represent what we heard from most students:

“I will be able to plant my shamba (farm) all year round and I will have different crops that will benefit me a lot. It will help us have enough food, help us alleviate poverty and our children will have school fees. Our lives are going to change for the better.”

“I know how to keep records. I know how to do crop rotation and partial budget in farm. I now know the season when I plant my crops so that I can meet peak demand…There will be no poverty in my family.”

“I will have improved food production and security, my living standards will be improved. I will provide my family with basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, education and will be improved economically.”

We look forward to beginning our second year at the training centre in February of 2015! Thank you so much for your support! You definitely played a significant role in impacting lives!
